Some pronounce is punch-key. Others pronounce it poonch-kee. But no matter how you put it, Paczki Day is widely celebrated here in Michigan, and it’s on the way.
Paczki Day, or Fat Tuesday, has strong ties here in Michigan and is part of the reason deep-fried confections are so popular in Mitten State.
Michigan, particularly in the Detroit and Hamtramck area, has a large population of Polish Catholic immigrants who have brought their traditions across the ocean with them.. Shrove Tuesday is celebrated by Catholics as a kind of last hurray before beginning the 40-day period of fasting known as Lent. On Shrove Tuesday, they can eat as much as they want before the Lenten fast begins. And eating pczki is definitely a way to treat yourself. Additionally, there are many flavors of paczki to choose from depending on your personal preference.
Different Paczki flavors
Honestly, there’s a paczki for everyone. Each paczki starts the same way: with a light and deliciously fried dough. But it’s where you go from there that makes every paczki different.
Paczki can be glazed or topped with powdered sugar. I’ve even seen options with a cinnamon and sugar coating. And the topping…oh my god, there are plenty of toppings to choose from.
The traditional filling is prune, but there are all kinds. There are fruit fillings like lemon, blueberry and raspberry. There are chocolate and vanilla creams and flans. You can even find more interesting flavor combinations like the Banana Cream Pie Paczki that Lansing’s Strange Matter is making this year. It has a banana cream pie filling and chocolate frosting on top.
