Angry vegan accuses supermarket of ‘trick’ her into eating meat

A vegan supermarket customer lashed out at the store and claimed she was “tricked” into eating chicken due to it being placed on the freezer shelves.

The buyer, who visited Australian supermarket chain Coles, took to social media to say that chicken products had been placed among vegan foods, leading her to believe they were meat free, according to The Mirror.

A photo from the freezer shows plant-based burgers, plant-based meatballs and veggie dim sims, with boxes of chicken nuggets and “I’m free of” chicken fillets on a shelf between – however, the chicken items are gluten-free, not meat-free like other foods placed nearby, reports 7News.

The customer was devastated after slipping in the chicken thinking it was suitable for vegans, asking the channel on Twitter: “Is it intentional that you put non-vegan products on the shelf between two vegan products?

“I am disgusted that you just tricked me into buying and eating chicken, when we are all trying so hard to save the planet.” You don’t care at all?

Coles said he has launched an investigation into the incident. (Image: The mirror)

A spokesperson for Coles told the outlet they would investigate his allegations and pledge to provide more options for vegan customers.

They said in a statement: “We have an increasing number of customers choosing to purchase vegan and meat alternatives and we are working hard to continue to expand this range to meet their demands.

“Whenever possible, we group similar items together, but this is not always possible due to the difference in storage space and layout in our stores in our network.

“We are concerned to hear about this customer’s experience and have referred this issue to the National Grocery Space Department for review.”
