However, for a different generation, their Willy Wonka is Johnny Depp. Depp portrayed the character in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the chocolate factory. Charlie and the chocolate factory is a 2005 remake of the 1971 film. Based on a novel by Roald Dahl, the story centers on Charlie Bucket, a young boy who receives a golden ticket that wins him a tour of the mystical chocolate factory run by Willy Wonka. The 1971 version is considered a classic by many, so expectations for it were high.

The film received strong reviews from critics with an 83% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many reviewers praised the creative settings, distinct visuals, and catchy soundtrack. However, audiences remain polarized with this film, especially with Depp’s performance. His portrayal of Wonka is very different from Wilder’s and comes across as a creepy child trapped in an adult’s body. While some admire the risks Depp is taking with this performance, others can’t fathom how bizarre it is.

Wilder is a Hollywood legend who starred in big comedies like Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles. The actor passed away in 2016 after a long career in the film industry. In 2013, Wilder gave an interview to 92nd Street Y where he shared his thoughts on Charlie and the chocolate factory.

“I think it’s an insult,” Wilder said. “To do that with Johnny Depp, who I think is a good actor and I like him, but I don’t care about that director. He’s a talented man, but I don’t like him doing things like him.

While Wilder had praise for Depp, his words were much harsher on Burton. Burton isn’t a director for everyone because he has a distinct style that can be off-putting. Her style is everywhere Willy Wonka remake, and it works for the public or not.

Depp and Burton have worked together on several occasions

Johnny Depp and Burton have worked together on many other projects besides the Willy Wonka remake. The two have collaborated eight times including Edward Scissorhands, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd, dark shadows, Alice in Wonderland, Ed Woodand sleepy hollow.

Not all of these movies were hits, but they’re still intriguing. Burton brings out the transformative performances of Depp, where he is sometimes barely recognizable. While the actor is best known for his portrayal of Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, it’s worth watching the movies he did with Burton as they are some of the most unique and weird performances.

Fans often compare the two Willy Wonka portrayals of Depp and Wilder, but they’re both so different. Soon, Timothée Chalamet will play a young Wonka in Wonka, coming in 2023.
