Hyderabad: Finance Minister T Harish Rao has slammed trade union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy accusing him of having no moral right to talk about Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and the martyrs of Telangana. Harish Rao reminded Kishan Reddy that he became Union Minister only because of Telangana which was established through the sacrifices of the Telangana people, but he totally failed to speak out for the development of the state.

Speaking to the media at Telangana Bhavan on Tuesday, Harish Rao ridiculed Kishan Reddy’s challenge to the Chief Minister for a debate at the Telangana Martyrs’ Memorial. He said any TRS leader would suffice to give Kishan Reddy an appropriate response. But he said the union minister had no moral right to visit the martyrs’ memorial as the latter had been reluctant to resign as a member of the former Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly along with others. MPs from Telangana.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the formation of Telangana and Union Home Minister Amit Shah called it a dark day, hurting the self-respect and feelings of the people of Telangana. But Kishan Reddy did not speak and instead knocked on the benches of Parliament. However, he found Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao’s remarks insulting because the latter raised objections on the Centre’s unfairness towards Telangana,” he argued.

The finance minister challenged Kishan Reddy to grant national project status to any project in Telangana to prove his mettle. He justified the Chief Minister’s remarks against the Centre, calling it the language of the Telangana people. “The Chief Minister had only asked why the Center cut Rs 65,000 crore to Food Corporation of India and Rs 25,000 crore to MGNREGS in the union budget 2022-23. He demanded an increase in bookings for SCs, STs and minorities,” he said. The minister said Chandrashekhar Rao’s language was far better than the BJP leaders’ hate speech meant to divide people on the basis of religion.

Harish Rao ridiculed the argument that the river link would improve irrigation facilities and wondered how it would benefit the people of Telangana if water from the Godavari River was channeled to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. “If there is enough excess water in the Godavari River, then the Center must prioritize to meet Telangana’s requirements in granting permissions to the proposed projects,” he demanded. He wondered if Kishan Reddy was working for the benefit of Telangana or other states.

He said BJP Telangana leaders were of no use to the state and had repeatedly failed to protect the interests of the state. He pointed out that despite the presence of four MPs, including a labor minister, no funds were allocated for relief measures during the Hyderabad floods. “BJP MPs could not get a new project or educational institutions. They couldn’t even make the Center keep its promises and the pending funds. Kishan Reddy must answer our questions, before questioning us,” he said.

He added that while the state government has spent Rs 364 crore on the Sammakka Saralamm Jatara over the past four years, the Center has allocated a meager Rs 2.5 crore. He recalled that Kishan Reddy, as minister of tourism and culture, could have devoted more funds to Asia’s biggest tribal festival.
