Survey reveals huge price swings for branded groceries

According to a survey, shoppers could pay four times as much for the same branded groceries depending on where and when they shop.

Which? found that Asda had the lowest average prices for branded groceries while Waitrose and Ocado were the most expensive, in a survey of 493 items at six major supermarkets last year.

Buyers could pay almost four times as much for Lavazza Qualita Rossa ground coffee (250g) at Ocado on separate days, with prices ranging from £ 1.30 over 63 days to £ 5 over 130 days – a difference of 284% .

Ocado said the price fluctuation was a mistake that had been corrected.

The survey also analyzed the prices of 19 product categories, finding that the cost of branded cakes and cookies fluctuated by 48% on average.

A 10-pack of Cadbury Chocolate Mini Rolls at Asda had the biggest difference in price, ranging from £ 1.20 to its cheapest but more than doubling to £ 2.60 on some days.

Prices for juices and smoothies varied by 41% on average, followed by cooking sauces (38%), crisps (36%) and cereals (35%).

Across all 19 categories, Asda had the lowest average prices for branded groceries, making it the best option for buyers who prefer branded items but don’t want to pay more.

Waitrose was the most expensive supermarket for branded items in eight categories, including energy drinks, ice cream and tea, and Ocado for seven categories, including juice drinks, coffee and cheddar.

Almost all of the products under investigation varied in price and could be found at a reduced price in one or more supermarkets at any time. However, one who? A survey found that one in five shoppers are baffled by grocery store promotions and that the majority (73%) would prefer consistently low prices.

Aldi and Lidl were not included in the survey because they stocked fewer branded products.
