Vegan Foods

Vegan food at the forefront of Spain’s largest hospitality conference HIP22

HIP 2022 (Hospitality Innovation Planet), the largest hotel conference in Spain, has made plant-based foods and vegan diets a protagonist of its next event. For the first time, the conference will tackle the vegan food boom with discussions and sessions that will analyze the trends underlying plant growth.

Held March 7-9 at Ifema Madrid, the plant-focused summit will also feature cooking workshops to develop new plant-based benchmarks for restaurant menus and promote sustainability. In addition, there will be an exhibition space where leading companies will present their innovations to the sector, including Spanish sensation Heura Foods, as well as The Vegetarian Butcher from Unilever, Alpro from Danone and Garden Gourmet from Nestlé.

Plant-based in Spain

Spain has seen a vegan diet explosion, with more than 5 million people now following a vegetarian or vegan diet in the country, around 13% of the population. According to the data, from 2017 to 2021, the number of people following a meatless diet increased by 34%. Despite the best efforts of the far-right political party Vox, sales of alternative meat in Spain have soared to over 86.5 million euros in 2020.

“In the DNA of this Congress has always been to bring the latest market trends, and in this case we are aware that more and more people are looking for a more sustainable food with the environment and, at the same time, healthy, which has led to a boom in vegetarian foods, as well as plant-based products, which are increasingly found in restaurants and on supermarket shelves,” said Eva Ballarín, Congress Director Hospitality 4.0, at Revista Hosteleria.
